It has come to this correspondent’s attention—through channels both impeccably placed and delightfully well-tended—that London, Ontario shall host your annual conference in September 2026. A most fitting setting for such a cultivated gathering, where ink meets soil and discourse blooms as reliably as the season’s finest crop. This year’s theme, “Crowning Agchievements,” promises a regal celebration of agriculture’s finest contributions, from field to feature story.

I, Lady Cowbell, your esteemed official spokesperson, shall preside over proceedings with my customary pastoral authority. Expect ideas to germinate, conversations to flourish, and achievements to be duly crowned in spirited fashion. Until then, this correspondent shall observe with great interest—and not the faintest hint of dirt under the fingernails.

Yours in discerning observation,

Mary MacArthur wins international travel bursary

(Ormstown, QC – June 1, 2026) – Agricultural journalist Mary MacArthur is the winner of the 2026 Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation international travel bursary sponsored by Bayer.

Mary, a freelance writer from Alberta with more than four decades of experience in agricultural reporting, will receive a $2,500 stipend towards her participation in the 2026 International Federation of Agricultural Journalists’ congress in Croatia this fall.

She writes for Western Producer, Canadian Cattlemen, Alberta Beef, Prairie Hog Country and Camrose Booster, and has been a member of the Alberta Farm Writers’ Association (AFWA) since 1995, where she’s served as both a director and president.

Mary was a member of the 2023 IFAJ congress organizing committee when the event has hosted in Olds, Alberta and has helped organize many AFWA tours and CFWF conferences.

“The IFAJ conference in Olds was the first IFAJ conference I had attended, and it was a joy to meet agricultural journalists from around the world who share a love of journalism and agriculture,” says Mary. “I can’t wait to attend my first international IFAJ congress and share the events and my new knowledge of Croatian agriculture with the Canadian groups.”

Bayer’s long-time support of this bursary recognizes the important role journalists and communicators play in the agriculture sector, and CFWF values the ongoing partnership with the company.

“Supporting the CFWF international bursary empowers Canadian agricultural journalists, like Mary MacArthur, to gain invaluable international experience,” says Ginger Rozmus, Communications Director at Bayer. “At Bayer, we believe that forming genuine connections amongst those in the industry is essential, as knowledge sharing and collaboration will continue to strengthen agriculture in Canada, as well as globally. We look forward to hearing the insights and stories that emerge from this year’s congress in Croatia.”

CFWF serves the common interests of agricultural journalists and communications professionals with approximately 350 members who belong to regional and provincial organizations. CFWF is a member of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists, a global organization founded in 1956 representing more than 5,000 communicators in 60 countries that support freedom of the press.

The 2026 IFAJ Congress will be held September 16 – 20, 2026 in Croatia. Registration is now open and more information is available at https://ifaj2026.danh.hr/.

Long-time CFWF member Jay Whetter has been selected as the winner of the 2025 CFWF International Travel Bursary sponsored by...

Long-time CFWF member Jay Whetter has been selected as the winner of the 2025 CFWF International Travel Bursary sponsored by Bayer Canada.

Jay, a freelance writer, podcaster and editor/chief content producer for Canola Digest, will receive a $2,500 stipend towards costs to attend the 2025 IFAJ Congress in Kenya. He’s also a past president of the Manitoba Farm Writers and Broadcasters Association and has just recently re-joined the MFWBA board as a director.

“I have never been to an IFAJ conference and have never been to Africa. The 2025 IFAJ gathering in Kenya is the perfect opportunity to achieve two firsts with one bursary,” says Jay. “I try many tools to communicate farming best practices and always seek new ones. I want to explore the African approach to extension, and I’m looking forward to doing so through the experience of attending the congress.”

Bayer’s valuable continuing support of this bursary recognizes the important role journalists and communicators play in the agriculture industry and CFWF appreciates its long-time partnership with the company.

“We’re thrilled to sponsor this International Bursary, as it’s a great opportunity to put Canadian agriculture on the global stage” says Ginger Rozmus, Bayer’s Senior Communications Lead. “Bayer is proud to support one of Canada’s incredible farm writers through helping them attend the upcoming congress. We know that they will have an unforgettable experience getting to learn and network with other farm writers from around the world. Congratulations Jay Whetter on this fantastic achievement!”

Annually, CFWF supports the travel costs of its IFAJ executive member – currently Alberta’s Craig Lester – to attend both the IFAJ congress and the annual executive meeting. As not all those funds will be needed by Craig this year, the CFWF board has voted to redirect some of that budget to create a second IFAJ congress bursary for 2025.

This means the judging committee – Clare Stanfield, John Greig and Lilian Schaer – were able to select a second winner, who will also receive a $2,500 travel stipend.

The second travel bursary has been awarded to Julia Smith from British Columbia. Julia, a livestock farmer, is on the board of the BC Farm Writers’ Association, as well as Executive Director of the Small-Scale Meat Producers’ Association.

“I’m honoured and delighted to receive this bursary. Attending the IFAJ Congress in Kenya is an incredible opportunity to explore innovative global approaches to climate-smart livestock agriculture and to learn from fellow communicators and farmers around the world,” says Julia. “Given my personal experience with climate challenges and small-scale farming, I’m particularly excited to exchange ideas, gain fresh perspectives, and build relationships that will amplify our efforts in Canada, while fostering meaningful
collaborations with like-minded colleagues globally.”

The 2025 IFAJ Congress will be held October 14 to 18 in Nairobi, Kenya. Registration is now open.

A resident of Chilliwack, BC, he lived within 30 minutes of where he grew up, the oldest of seven children.

The Saturday before his death, his friends of 50+ years, Barb and Arnie, were with him at Chilliwack’s 150th anniversary singing a number of “oldies”, including belting out the chorus of Sweet Caroline.

He also enjoyed duplicate bridge. After mostly retiring from agriculture writing, he played bridge several days a week and was treasurer for his bridge group. He also did taxes for small businesses and individuals – talk about being a renaissance man!

Barb was responsible for Dave’s foray into ag writing. Arnie and he worked together at CHWK radio in the 70s when Dave was a copywriter and Barb got him the job at Country Life in BC in 1985.

When David semi-retired from the paper in 2017 (after 30 years of prolific writing) other Country Life writers were frequently asked “where’s David?” He also wrote for a number of regional and national agriculture publications. The Fraser Valley plowing events were a favourite of his and he turned out many a story about them for Country Life where he remained editor emeritus.

Prior to Cathy Glover owning Country Life in BC and serving as publisher, David worked with Peter Wilding. Peter shared the following about David:

“There are almost limitless stories to tell about Dave, but first and foremost was his professionalism. His very dry and wry sense of humor punctuated his writing. He had no time for journalists who toed the company line or didn’t do proper research. In his case, a lot of research was already done, and sorted away in his unbelievable memory. His retention served him well over the years, enabling him to write with authority under pressure at deadline.”

He was a champion of agriculture, dedicated to understanding situations and reporting the information correctly. He was given the CFWF Lifetime Achievement award in 2017, the Scotiabank Champion of Agriculture in 2018 and the 2000 BC Agriculturalist of the Year award from the BC institute of Agrologists.

But awards were never David’s motivation.

David mentored many in agriculture writing, sharing his passion for farming, particularly dairy. He was an integral part of the BC Farm Writers’ Association (reviving the chapter in the early 90s with Tony Greaves), the Canadian Farm Writers Federation (president from 1997 to 1999 and a regional director for many years) and a member of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists. It is rumoured, he was BCFWA president for 21 years and served as treasurer for nearly as long. Under his leadership the BCFWA scholarship was created, many conferences organized and tours planned. David also raised significant sponsorships given his trusted relationships.

One BCFWA member summed up David’s commitment to the industry: “No one has written more words about B.C. agriculture than David Schmidt.”

He made himself available to share insights of the past and opinions on going forward. Pens were always in his shirt pocket. He attended countless conferences (he would likely take a moment to look at his notes to give a number) and he drove to all but the one in New Zealand which he took medication for to tolerate the flight.

He jokingly called the IFAJ 2023 BC pre-tour he spearheaded and raised funds for as his “swan song.”

In lieu of flowers, David’s family appreciates donations to the MCC – https://www.mcccentre.ca/

To honour David, BCFWA is hosting a “wake” type Zoom.

BCFWA, CFWA and IFAJ members present and past are welcome. David would want us to enjoy each other’s company, recall his story-telling and remember his chuckle, usually at himself. If there are past members you know who may wish to participate, please share this email with them.

Shazia Khalid from Ontario to attend the 2023 IFAJ Congress in Alberta

Agricultural writer Shazia Khalid has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation (CFWF) International Bursary, sponsored by Bayer Canada.

Khalid, based in Guelph, Ontario, writes for the Canadian Farmer, a Guelph-based ethnocultural magazine for newcomers to Canada. She works in five languages as a writer and translator – English, Punjabi, Urdu, Afghani and Arabic. Khalid has served as a board member with Eastern Canada Farm Writers’ Association (ECFWA) since May 2022.
Attending the IFAJ Congress is an excellent opportunity for Khalid to showcase Canadian diversity by connecting with delegates from around the world. “I grew up in a small village in an agricultural hub in rural Punjab, Pakistan. My family has been farming for the past 150 years. Trained as a farmer, writer, and translator, I am very passionate about connecting newcomers and immigrants to the Canadian agricultural sector,” she says.
The bursary will cover up to $2,500 of registration fees and travel expenses to attend the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) annual congress in Calgary and Olds, Alberta from June 27 to July 3, 2023.

In the coming year Khalid will share the information gathered at the congress with fellow farm writers which she feels will be an excellent opportunity to showcase diversity and share the success story of an immigrant woman in Canadian agricultural communications. She hopes this will encourage and help recruit more newcomer and immigrant communication professionals.

Bayer Canada is pleased to present such a deserving candidate with this year’s bursary, according to Ginger Rozmus, Communications Leader at Bayer Crop Science Canada.

“It benefits everyone when journalists are passionate and knowledgeable about agriculture, in Canada and beyond,” says Rozmus. “Journalists play a critical role in telling the Canadian agriculture story, inspiring dialogue, and helping others better appreciate how our food, farmers, and industry are advancing to feed people across the globe. Shazia’s experience with agriculture in in both Pakistan and Canada make her an amazing choice for this award, and she will be able to learn and share her experiences as she connects with agricultural journalists and communicators around the world.”

CFWF would like to thank Bayer Canada for continuing to support this bursary. We would also like to thank the 2023 judging panel: Rachel Telford, CFWF President, and Crystal Jorgeson and John Greig, both CFWF past-presidents.

(Regina, Saskatchewan – October 1, 2022) The 2022 Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation (CFWF) Lifetime Achievement Award was announced at the CFWF annual conference banquet held at the Atlas Hotel in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Kevin and Marlene Hursh were presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. They were recognized for their complete and total dedication to agricultural journalism and communications.

Kevin’s name has practically been synonymous with farm journalism in Saskatchewan for decades. Saskatchewan audiences were first introduced to Kevin through his early work as the Agriculture News Editor with CTV in Saskatoon into the early 1990’s. Since then he was a long-time editor with FCC’s AgriSuccess magazine, and his work has been published in many publications.

He has always had a strong involvement with the agriculture industry and commodity associations. In addition to operating his own farm, he was the Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Mustard Development Commission for many years and still holds this position with the Canary Seed Development Commission of Saskatchewan and the Inland Terminal Association of Canada. He has also been very active in the Saskatchewan Farm Writers Association (SFWA), being the president of the organization for many years.

Marlene has been right by Kevin in all these adventures and has been the SFWA Treasurer for almost the entire 21st Century. Her work ethic is like no other, and the SFWA and CFWF are extremely grateful for all her efforts and contributions on the part of the organizations. Her work includes serving on the SFWA Board as well as putting her organizing skills behind several CFWF conferences hosted in Saskatchewan over the years.

Both Kevin and Marlene are very deserving of this award. We would like to thank them both for their time and commitment they have put in over the years.

Congratulations to both of you!
