<p class="font_9">Freelance agriculture writer Lilian Schaer has been awarded the 2019 Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation (CFWF) International Bursary sponsored by Bayer. Schaer will attend the International Federation of Agriculture Journalists (IFAJ) Congress in Minneapolis this July.</p>
<p class="font_9">Schaer, based in Guelph, Ontario, writes for agricultural publications across Canada and internationally and works with commodity and agricultural organizations as a communications specialist. She is a past-president of the Eastern Canada Farm Writers’ Association, a former CFWF board member, and served as co-chair of the 2011 IFAJ Congress when it was hosted in Canada.</p>
<p class="font_9">Schaer has attended every IFAJ Congress since 2007 and believes it is an important professional development and networking opportunity. “IFAJ gives me the opportunity to learn about agriculture in a different part of the world to see how things are different but also to see how we aren’t that different from each other. You see those nuances when you have a chance to meet people and visit their farms, visit the processing facilities, their research stations,” says Schaer. “Over the years you develop relationships with people in all these different countries all over the world. As a freelancer, it has been absolutely invaluable over the course of my career to build this network.”</p>
<p class="font_9">The bursary will cover up to $2,500 of registration fees and travel expenses. As the bursary winner, Schaer has plans to share her experience with CFWF members through a presentation at the next national conference in B.C., on Twitter, and through Instagram. She also plans to write news articles based on the tour stops and congress program for the various agricultural publications she works for.</p>
<p class="font_9">“I really commend Bayer for being such a longstanding supporter of Canadian farm writers going to IFAJ. And I’m appreciative of the fact that this year I am the one benefitting from that,” says Schaer.</p>
<p class="font_9">Bayer’s support of this bursary recognizes the important role journalists and communicators play within the agriculture industry.</p>
<p class="font_9">“Attending an IFAJ Congress is an excellent opportunity to learn and grow,” says Trish Jordan, public &amp;amp; industry affairs director with Bayer. “Bayer believes that engaging with, and learning from, colleagues and farmers from around the globe broadens the perspective of Canadian agriculture journalists and communicators and ultimately helps them excel at their craft.”</p>
<p class="font_9">This year’s IFAJ Congress is being held in conjunction with the American Ag Media Summit, providing access to additional skills workshops on writing and photography and a wide-range of tours. “I’m planning to attend the IFAJ post-Congress tour to California,” says Schaer. “It promises to be a deep dive into the production issues they have. I’m really intrigued and interested to see what I can learn there as I do a lot of work in the horticulture sector and California comes up a lot in terms of where our produce comes from, who we compete with, and the issues they have around drought and labour – which are issues we face as well.”</p>

<p><span>Guelph ON, 09 April 2019 &#8211; After over ten years of serving the agri-food sector in Ontario, the Agri-Food Management Institute (AMI) will be transferring its resources to industry allies and winding down its operations as a result of changes to its funding structure.</span></p>
<p><span>Farm Management Canada will take over the hosting of AMI&#8217;s online business management tools, resources and workshops so they can continue to provide value to farmers. Food Processing Skills Canada will be the new host of the online management tools for processors.</span></p>
<p><span>“We are extremely proud of AMI&#8217;s efforts to promote business management and develop tools and resources to help farmers and processors with business planning, management and strategic thinking,” says AMI Vice Chair Laurie Nicol. “I&#8217;m proud of the work our past and current board members have put into this organization; this was not an easy decision to make. ”</span></p>
<p><span>Farm Management Canada has partnered with AMI on various projects in the past, making them an ideal host for the farm-related reports, online training tools and other resources that AMI has developed. Food Processing Skills Canada has effectively grown their training platform over the past several years and AMI&#8217;s online materials will complement their existing resources.</span></p>
<p><span>A 2016 study by AMI in partnership with Farm Management Canada established the first-ever link between farm business management and profitability, and identified the top seven habits of Canada&#8217;s most successful farmers. Other successful initiatives included the popular Advanced Farm Management Program, a series of regional food business-focused conferences, and a widely used program that supported the inclusion of business management topics and speakers on the agendas of industry events.</span></p>
<p><span>AMI had its start as a funding program dedicated to farm business management and administered by the Agricultural Adaptation Council. After becoming a stand-alone organization with support from the provincial and federal governments, AMI focused its activities on farm business management training and awareness, and eventually saw its mandate expand to include food and beverage processing businesses as well.</span></p>

<p><strong>Farmers Increasingly Rely on Strategic Tillage Tools for Agronomic Needs</strong></p>
<p>As more farmers incorporate tillage into their farm management practices to address specific agronomic needs, LEMKEN has unveiled its newest compact disc harrow, the Rubin 10.</p>
<p>The Rubin 10 completes LEMKEN’s versatile line of compact disc harrows, which has evolved over the past two decades to meet a broad range of strategic tillage needs facing Canadian farmers.</p>
<p>“As farmers critically assess the agronomic needs on their farms, we’re increasingly seeing them turn to strategic tillage to address many of those needs,” says Laurent Letzter, Managing Director of LEMKEN Canada. Letzter says he has seen strategic tillage used across Canada to resolve challenges such as:</p>
<p>• Mixing large volumes of organic matter evenly into the soil in one pass for efficient trash management while minimizing labor and fuel costs<br />
• Mechanically killing weeds, including herbicide-resistant weeds<br />
• Disrupting disease and pest cycles, and interrupting the evolution of fungicide resistance<br />
• Encouraging weed seeds to germinate in the fall or before a pre-season herbicide application to maximize the effectiveness of the herbicide<br />
• Improving soil structure and water infiltration<br />
• Smoothing out ruts in fields to improve seeder and sprayer operation<br />
• Breaking up pastures<br />
• Managing the effect of severe weather variability by reclaiming land around potholes and sloughs</p>
<p><strong>Intensive, Shallow Cultivation</strong></p>
<p>Beginning with the launch of its first compact disc harrow, the Rubin 9 in 2001, LEMKEN has developed a full slate of compact disc harrows that allow farmers to perform intensive shallow cultivation at high working speeds in one pass to achieve uniform mixing of heavy organic matter in any soil type, crop, or farming system.</p>
<p>To answer a need for shallower stubble cultivation that also provides one-pass seedbed preparation in light and medium soils at a working depth of up to four inches, LEMKEN developed its popular Heliodor machine in 2005 with widths of up to 52 feet.</p>
<p>The need for a heavier machine that was capable of deeper cultivation in heavy soil and dense corn residue led to the Rubin 12 compact disc harrow in 2013 with its single-pass, 29-inch diameter discs and working depth of up to eight inches.</p>
<p><strong>Rubin 10 Bridges the Gap Between the Heliodor and Rubin 12</strong></p>
<p>As refinements were made over the years to the Heliodor and Rubin 12, LEMKEN began developing a new machine to replace the Rubin 9 – the anchor of LEMKEN’s compact disc line. Years of design and testing has resulted in a new machine that fully bridges the gap between the Heliodor and Rubin 12, creating a product line that can meet every farmer’s stubble cultivation needs.</p>
<p>While the Rubin 9 has sold 22,000 units worldwide, reflecting the strong demand for this mid-level compact disc, the new Rubin 10 exceeds the capabilities of the Rubin 9 and will replace it as LEMKEN’s mid-range compact disc when production begins in 2019.</p>
<p><strong>Lower Fuel Costs; Longer Service Life</strong></p>
<p>The Rubin 10 offers the same intensive uniform mixing as the Rubin 9 at shallow depths of up to 6 inches. It handles heavy trash more aggressively than the Rubin 9 with its bigger, stronger discs that measure 25 inches in diameter. It also delivers more efficient field performance with its new symmetrical disc arrangement on both sides of the machine, which eliminates lateral pull, ensuring the machine pulls straight and reducing fuel consumption. This disc arrangement was first mastered on the Rubin 12.</p>
<p>The Rubin 10 features surface-hardened DuraMaxx for a 30 per cent longer service life than conventional discs. Each disc is equipped with override protection that significantly minimizes frame loads when discs hit obstacles in the field.</p>
<p>The integrated harrow behind the first row of discs and the rear impact and leveling harrow improve the crumbling and distribution of soil and organic matter for an even, seedbed-ready finish. The Rubin 10 will replace the Rubin 9 when it begins production in January 2019.</p>
<p>“LEMKEN’s ongoing development of compact disc harrows and other strategic tillage tools continues to be driven by farmer demand for effective strategic tillage solutions that address agronomic challenges in a single pass while leaving the field seedbed ready,” says Letzter.</p>
<p><strong>LEMKEN Announces New Acquisition</strong></p>
<p>As LEMKEN continues pursuing new products and new solutions to help farmers operate more efficiently, the company has announced it has just acquired two divisions of the Dutch company, STEKETEE. With this recent acquisition, LEMKEN will be adding innovative hoeing technology for mechanical weed control to its product range, as well as advanced camera technology that enables these STEKETEE machines to hoe between the rows and between plants within a row.</p>
<p>“As the acceptance of chemical crop care agents decreases, and farmers grapple with the growing problem of herbicide-resistant weeds, the addition of the STEKETEE technology to LEMKEN’s product offering bolsters our company’s commitment to always provide farmers with the right strategic tillage machines to do the job effectively and efficiently, both now and into the future,” says Letzter.</p>

<p>​​​​​​​​Winnipeg, Manitoba — Earlier today, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister, Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced a series​ of enhancements to the Advance Payments Program (APP) that support farmers facing cash flow challenges in Canada&#8217;s grains and oilseeds sector. These changes include increasing the maximum allowable limit available under the APP from $400,000 to $1,000,000, and expanding the program&#8217;s interest-free component for canola from $100,000 to $500,000 until market conditions stabilize. The interest-free component will remain at $100,000 for all other commodities included under the APP.</p>
<p>&#8220;The current market situation is creating great uncertainty for farmers,&#8221; says Bernie McClean, President of Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA). &#8220;With cash flow being farmers&#8217; most immediate concern, we welcome enhancements that will help build financial predictability for at least the short to medium-term.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The Canola Working Group established by Minister B​ibeau has focused on a number of short, medium and long-term tools that could help farmers and the wider industry manage through the current market access issues with China,&#8221; says Rick White, CEO at CCGA. &#8220;With planting just getting started and higher than normal stocks of last year&#8217;s canola crop remaining in farmers&#8217; bins, we&#8217;re pleased to see actions being taken on the recommendations of the working group.&#8221;</p>
<p>With the APP program improvements just announced, CCGA is working with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada program staff to incorporate the changes into the cash advance program. &#8220;We&#8217;re already working on the necessary changes to our systems so that farmers can access these benefits quickly,&#8221; says White. White expects CCGA will be in a position to process applications at the new limits in the near future. CCGA began issuing advances under the 2019-20 APP on April 1, 2019.</p>

<p>In addition to the changes announced about the APP, Minister Bibeau also announced a 2-month extension to the application deadline for AgriStability.</p>

<p>There can be little doubt that 2018 will go down in the record books as the worst year in Ontario for dealing with <a href="https://farmtario.com/news/governments-promise-help-for-farmers-with-don-infected-corn/">ear mould in corn</a> and contamination by deoxynivalenol (DON). Wet weather through silking and then again in much of October and November challenged growers getting into their fields for timely harvesting of their corn crops, and what followed only added to their frustrations: waiting in line at the elevator to see whether their loads would be acceptable.</p>
<p>Now, the outcome is well known and most growers are just glad to see 2018 in their rear-view mirrors.</p>

<p>What’s unsettling is that last fall wasn’t a case of a perfect storm of weather conditions and disease inoculum. Worse, there are indications the problem has yet to peak.</p>
<p>It’s what many had feared. The corn sector has fallen behind in dealing with ear rot diseases at that same time those outbreaks have worsened.</p>
<h2>The numbers are obvious</h2>
<p>Looking at the figures compiled by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), there is little doubt about 2018 and DON concentrations (see Table 1 below). At the 2019 FarmSmart conference in Guelph, Albert Tenuta and Dr. David Hooker made a presentation that included 2018 OMAFRA survey data.</p>

<p>On their own, the numbers are disturbing, particularly the double-digit figures on DON concentrations of greater than 5.0 parts per million (ppm), which makes the grain unsuitable for use in diets for cattle and poultry (see Table 2 below). When the data are compared with the seven previous years, however, the message is clear: 2018 really was the worst year to date for ear mould and subsequent DON concentrations.</p>

<p>One added revelation is that a pattern is beginning to emerge from the past eight years. Yes, 2018 was bad, but 2017, 2016 and 2011 were also tough years when looking at DON concentrations greater than five ppm. And 2006 had approached the severity of last year.</p>

<p>According to Tenuta, growers might consider the impact of 2018 and relax, believing 2019 can’t possibly see a repeat of the conditions that caused so much grief for farmers and the industry. But with four of the past eight years having DON issues, it’s a growing problem. Tenuta notes there are hot spots each year in parts of Ontario: the difference between 2018 and other problem years is that these areas have a larger geographical footprint.</p>
<p>“Whenever we have these big epidemic years, it is always centred around southwestern Ontario,” says Tenuta, field crops pathologist with OMAFRA. “It’s because there are a lot of acres. Whether it’s corn or wheat, that’s the primary production area of the province. If they’re affected significantly, then the province is affected significantly.”</p>
<h2>Wheat’s ahead of corn?</h2>
<p>Corn and wheat actually share a connection in the mould-and-blight picture in the region since gibberella ear mould (GER) and fusarium head blight (FHB) are caused by the same fungal pathogen, Fusarium graminearum. In corn, GER is named after the sexual stage of the pathogen, Gibberella zeae.</p>
<p>Nomenclature aside, Tenuta notes that in the past five to seven years, the wheat sector has had several fusarium head blight hot spots but they haven’t had the same impact previously observed.</p>
<p>“That tells the story of where the two industries have been moving,” says Tenuta. “It’s the same pathogen but the wheat sector is moving towards creating more tolerant wheat varieties, and more importantly, removing more of those really susceptible varieties from availability to the producers. So we’re planting fewer acres of those susceptible wheat varieties and we’re seeing the development of more and better fungicides that target fusarium head blight.”</p>
<p>A third pillar for wheat is in researching optimal timing for fungicide applications, including the development of the DONcast model, and all of these management tools or strategies have helped reduce the overall risk in some years while decreasing severe losses.</p>
<p>“When we look at the corn side — and 2018 is a great example — we had some high-yielding corn hybrids that were very susceptible to gibberella and DON production, and those hybrids covered a lot of acres in the southwest,” says Tenuta. “Unfortunately, it’s going back to the management decisions by the producers and in many cases, they’re starting to select fewer hybrids for their farm and in doing so, you’re decreasing the diversity on your farm and potentially increasing your risk, as well.”</p>
<h2>High turnover on hybrids</h2>
<p>That trend presents additional challenges to the grower given the rate of turnover of hybrids together with the focus on yield and on weed and insect resistance by the seed and breeding sector. Yet a silver lining may be that 2018 has reset the focus on diseases.</p>
<p>“Gibberella isn’t a major issue every year and with some of the newer hybrids, we don’t know enough about the level of tolerance amongst the majority of hybrids,” says Leanne Freitag, agronomic services support manager with Syngenta Canada. “There are a few that stand out one way or another, especially in years like 2018, but it can be hard to get a handle on them because of a lot of hybrids don’t last more than a few years, and during that time, DON might not be an issue.”</p>
<p>Some hybrids have been growing for three to five years, during growing seasons when ear rots weren’t an issue, or at the very least, weren’t an issue in those identified hot spots. But in 2018, says Freitag, multiple factors combined and led to a severe outbreak whose effects were devastating to some.</p>
<p>Although planting date wasn’t a direct cause of the epidemic, weather conditions occurred at the right time to infect — i.e. when silks were emerging, causing high levels of infection in several areas. Then the weather conditions during grain-fill were conducive for infection to progress and thrive.</p>
<p>Breeding and selecting for disease resistance is a difficult process, reminds Freitag, adding that the main focus of researchers and breeders in recent history has been on yield and insect resistance. And that tightened focus is shifting as diseases like gibberella or even penicillium and diplodia ear rots become more prevalent.</p>
<p>“Breeders are putting more focus on breeding and selecting for higher tolerance of DON and gibberella but a hybrid still has to be brought all the way up to the commercial level and perform well in the field,” says Freitag.</p>
<h2>Increasing aggression?</h2>
<p>Freitag has also heard of a disturbing trend that was outlined earlier this year by Dr. Pierce Paul from Ohio State University, who reported that there are two main DON pathogens in corn.</p>
<p>“One is much more aggressive, in that it has a higher ability to produce more disease and more mycotoxins,” says Freitag. According to Paul, 20 years ago, the more aggressive DON represented only three per cent of the pathogen population in corn and the less aggressive represented 93 per cent. A decade later, it had shifted so the more aggressive one represented 44 per cent and the less aggressive was at 56 per cent.</p>
<p>Freitag hasn’t heard what’s happened in the past 10 years but given the progression from the late 1990s to the late 2000s, it stands to reason that the more aggressive pathogen would occupy a greater percentage. And that may be why DON has increased in frequency.</p>
<p>As for dealing with the disease, both Freitag and Tenuta recognize there are strategies that already exist. Freitag points to livestock producers, particularly those in the hog sector, who have worked to understand which hybrids are susceptible and which have better tolerance.</p>
<p>As well, from an agronomic standpoint, working with plant populations, row widths and minimizing plant variability — by conducting proper planter maintenance and monitoring planting speeds to promote more uniform emergence — are all keys to managing risks. Good soil fertility is another fundamental that will help mitigate stress, as well.</p>
<p>Of course, the weather always has the final say.</p>
<p>For Tenuta, management comes with accepting that diseases like gibberella are now a common fact of life for growers. But they also can’t assume that by applying a fungicide, they’re getting ear rot control, which may not be the case.</p>
<p>Fungicide applications pertain to two purposes: for foliar diseases at that tassel or pre-silk timing, and as a method of improving plant health. Neither targets ear rots.</p>
<p>“Just because a grower has applied a fungicide does not necessarily mean they’re getting the benefit of an ear rot or DON reduction,” says Tenuta. “You have to be targeting the silks and the timing, and you need a prothioconazole or metconazole product to help on the gibberella and DON side, as well.”</p>
<p>For growers in the Great Lakes region of Ontario, gibberella ear rot should be one of the highest priorities in corn production, adds Tenuta.</p>
<p>“We have inoculum all around for wheat and corn, ” Tenuta says. “It’s not a limiting factor.”</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">It’s never been easy to be a farmer, but now it’s even more complicated. Just add up the risks: skyrocketing land and equipment prices, increasingly demanding consumers, tightening markets, unreliable weather, growing trade uncertainty…</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Meanwhile, government agriculture research and extension dollars dwindle, leaving farmers more on their own to figure out how to respond to changing agronomic and business pressures.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Luckily, farmers, by nature or necessity, tend to be resilient and adaptable. That’s why tomorrow’s best farmers will be adding on-farm research to their regular to-do lists.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“Yes, farmers can — and really they should — conduct research on their own farms,” says Catherine Tarasoff, a crop scientist and the author of the <em>Guide to On-Farm Demonstration Research</em>, a how-to manual for farmers released by the B.C. Forage Council.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“There’s a real misconception that research has to be complicated, meticulous and technical to be good; that it is overwhelmingly difficult or time-consuming. That isn’t the case at all,” Tarasoff says. “All you need to do to conduct a successful on-farm research project is to ask one question and then figure out a simple way to measure results to find an answer to that question. That’s it.”</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">While on-farm research is not as rigorously tested, replicated and analyzed as laboratory-style research, its results can still be applicable and useful to an individual farm. <em>Country Guide</em> sat down with Tarasoff to get a quick primer on how to conduct on-farm research in any farm type or scale.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Let’s call a spade a spade: an on-farm research project will demand time and effort, but it can have a positive return on investment. To achieve that, you first need to identify your personal goals and priorities — the 10,000-foot reasons that shape your business.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“Goals are a simple summary of ‘why’ but do not get into any details surrounding ‘how,’” explains Tarasoff.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Divide a piece of paper into three columns. In the first, write a list of the general, biggest-picture improvements you’d like to see. In the second, write a list of your farm and personal priorities. In the third, write a list of your business resources, opportunities and limitations.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Then look at your first column and consider how well each improvement aligns with columns two and three. If you wrote down “maximize profits” in column one but column two’s highest priority is “improved work-life balance,” your farm will gain no value from a project that tests a time-sucking intensive-management technique. However, it might gain value from a project that tests nitrogen efficiency.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Each on-farm research project should be designed to address a single goal. All businesses are built around multiple priorities, but an on-farm research project’s success hinges on it being simple, low-cost and manageable, and on its answers being clear and obvious. If your goal is to make more money, don’t muddy it and reduce your chance of success by also trying to include sustainability or other take-aways within the same project.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“You do not need to answer everything in one research effort,” says Tarasoff. “Don’t get overwhelmed. Small and precise does not mean insignificant. Results are powerful and informative, even if your question was small — probably especially if your question was small.”</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Once you have determined your goal, drill down into objectives. For example, if your priority is to improve environmental sustainability, an objective might be to reduce fertilizer usage by X per cent.</span></p>

<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">Start making your plan</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Once you have identified a specific goal, it’s time to create a road map.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">While most farmers prefer “productive” work and find the planning stage of a research project onerous and slow, it’s important to take the time at your kitchen table to detail the specifics of your project.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Start by brainstorming a list of questions. For example, if your goal is to increase profits and your objectives are to decrease fertilizer use and increase yields, you might ask:</span></p>
<ul>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">What are ideal varieties for my specific soil type?</span></li>
<li class="p1">What fertilizer rates do I need for optimal production?</li>
<li class="p1">Will new variety X offer better returns?</li>
</ul>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Look at your list and identify which question, if answered, would offer the greatest return. Then, consider whether those questions need complicated or simple testing. Remember, simplicity is key.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“A concise, focused experiment that looks to answer a yes/no or an A versus B question is the most likely to be successful,” says Tarasoff.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“You don’t need to measure everything. If you’re interested in yield, don’t measure soil microbes. Focus only on what you need to determine to answer your specific question.”</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Then, carefully analyze the “how” of your experiment. A project’s success hinges on choosing a design that will work, not just in theory but in the practical reality of your farm business.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“You may come up with the perfect question and the ideal way of measuring for that question, but if the measurements need to be taken at your busiest time of year, your design may not be realistic,” says Tarasoff.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">Figure out the details</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Be realistic about what the proposed project will require, and then be pragmatic about whether your farm can comfortably carry that outlay. If a project uncomfortably stretches your resources, consider trying to achieve that goal via a different, less investment-heavy angle. Remember: simple is better.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">In this stage, you need to draw maps, consider details, and get ultra-specific in your planning. Focus on designing your project to minimize outside factors that could skew your results. If your project is to optimize fertilizer rates, for example, choose an average representative location for your farm.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Tarasoff also recommends these steps:</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>1</strong>. Consider access and any features within the proposed project area.<br />
</span><span class="s1"><strong>2</strong>. Consider long-term operations: could this project affect long-term use of the proposed test site?<br />
</span><span class="s1"><strong>3</strong>. Identify and then plan to avoid edges, anomalies, and travel-through areas.<br />
</span><span class="s1"><strong>4</strong>. Ensure there is room for equipment.<br />
</span><span class="s1"><strong>5</strong>. Go fairly big: in order to ensure natural variation is averaged out, test over a decently large area. A forage producer, for example, should test a swath about 500 feet long. A fruit producer should test multiple trees.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Now, map it. Working to scale, identify all reference features including which areas to avoid. Think through how you will delineate the edges of your test plot: your results will only be as good as the data you put in.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Ideally (and depending on the project), plan for two passes of any equipment to ensure any equipment inconsistences are taken into account.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">Roll it out!</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Be ready for pitfalls, roadblocks and unexpected research turns. As Tarasoff says, the only certainty in research is uncertainty. In order to maximize the value of your efforts, be ready to make changes and adjustments on the fly. This may require modifying your research question and/or analyzing or adjusting your measurements should a variable appear.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“In research, things always go sideways. If you don’t have a good idea of exactly why you’re doing it, it’s hard to salvage. If you have a good plan, it’s easier to get some value even when your project doesn’t go the way you planned,” says Tarasoff. “Don’t worry about what could have been. Do what you can to capture value with what you’ve got.”</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">Collect your data</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">If you apply a treatment to a significant area, testing the whole population’s response would be impossible. For example, if you apply one rate of fertilizer to half a field of alfalfa and another rate to the other half, sampling every plant’s response would take forever. Instead, you need to sample enough plants and the right plants to get a true representation of the total population.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“It is a really hard thing to choose an accurate sample,” says Tarasoff. “The challenge is stopping your brain from looking for the result you expect. Your eyes will find what your mind wants them to. Don’t look for the best, healthiest plants or avoid the ones that don’t fit your notion of how the experiment was supposed to turn out.”</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Instead, she recommends finding a technique that forces you to take a completely random sample. If sampling a wheat field, for example, she suggests using a hula hoop to outline a sample area and then collecting every plant inside that hoop.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Remember that variability exists everywhere. Depending on the project, farmers may have the option to avoid patches/sites that are particularly variable. As Tarasoff says, “Why introduce high levels of variability if you can avoid them?”</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“To minimize the impact of variability on your final results, sample enough of the population to dilute outlier data, repeat the experiment as often as possible (repetition confirms and builds confidence in the results), and — most importantly — design your project to offer strong enough results that subtle variability doesn’t matter,” says Tarasoff.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">Analyze your results</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">You made your plan; you carried it out; now you have a collection of raw data. So far, so good. But you’re not home-free yet. Don’t guess or base your answers on a quick visual estimate. Instead, actively analyze those results to determine how much of an impact your tested treatment makes. In many cases, analysis is as simple as inputting numbers into a spreadsheet. Let the numbers speak for themselves.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">What if there is no difference in your research results? For example, if you test two fertilizers and see no yield difference at all, are your efforts of no value? “There’s always a difference!” says Tarasoff. “It might not be the difference you expected, but there’s always a difference. Sometimes you just have to look at the answers differently.” For example, maybe the difference comes down to price, ease of use, or timing: factors that provide unintended benefits.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">Put that research to work!</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">While research has long been considered a complicated task only achievable by scientists, research is actually anything that improves one’s understanding of the world around you.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“Think of a little kid, lying in the grass and looking through a magnifying glass at an insect,” says Tarasoff. Once he knows, from hands-on experience, that the bug he’s looking at has six legs, he’ll never make the mistake of thinking it might just have four. That’s research, and it’s just as authentic and valuable a form of research as anything conducted in a lab.”</span></p>

<p>FARMERS ARE BULLISH ON GRAIN DRYERS, BUT HAVE THEY RUN THE NUMBERS?</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">With certain pockets of </span><span class="s2">Western Canada being dealt losing hands at harvest year after year, grain drying is moving from a “nice to have” to a “need to have.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Starting in 2016, wicked fall weather has plagued thousands of farmers. Today, with many opting for straight-cut options, the wait time to get into fields becomes all the more dangerous when unpredictable weather may strong-arm a farmer’s harvest. As a result, grain sits, and sits, and sits some more. Meanwhile, farmers continue to bite their nails, stress mounts and tough financial questions begin to loom.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Any farmer will attest to their desire of a safe, uneventful and timely harvest. However, with weather patterns and farming practices changing, many choose to stop waiting and start pushing. In Alberta, it’s most common to see wheat, canola and malting barley as the top crops to be tossed in the dryer. At times pulse crops may be dried, too.</span></p>

</span><span class="s2">Scott Keller never used to dry grain above 19 per cent at his New Norway farm. However, the last three years the weather forced his hand and drying became necessary to salvage the crop. He has handled the job with a 1995 IBEC Vertec 5500 that has a 700 bu/hr capacity. It usually dries 400 to 500 bushels at a time, but can be as low as 150 if the grain is sopping wet. Since 2016, Keller has dried more than 500,000 bushels of his grain, which, on average, is about 80 per cent of his annual crop.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Twenty-four years ago, Keller’s father paid $30,000 for the dryer and Keller sees no reason to mess with a good thing. They have two wet bins—4,000 and 2,200 bushels—and four dry hopper bins with a total capacity of 15,000 bushels. His final storage bins can hold 84,000 bushels in addition to his grain bagging, which is anywhere from 50,000 to 90,000 bushels. So far, it’s a good system at his 2,500-acre farm.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“We need about three of those four dry bins every day,” he said, adding they combine anywhere from 8,000 to 12,000 bushels under favourable conditions. “Once you get a dry bin full it takes a good eight hours to cool to a safe temperature [under 20°C] with an aeration fan. With four dry bins we will have two full and cooled by next morning. The third bin that we dried grain into through the night won’t be cool enough yet. So, by having four dry bins we can leave that third bin cool the next night so we don’t have any storage issues caused by warm grain. Having extra dry bins gives you that flexibility to get the grain cooled and in good condition.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">He operates single-phase power on a 25-Kilovolt-Amp (kVA) transformer and has never had an outage, even when running his dryer, which pulls 75 amps and powers four aeration fans. “The only thing I didn’t try to do was some welding,” he said with a laugh. “Never yet have we been limited with our current power capacity.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Between last August and November, Keller’s total power bill was $2,107. Of that, $1,335 was directly related to his dryer and aeration fans. His utility costs of power and natural gas to dry his grain tallied 5.6 cents per bushel, four cents to natural gas and 1.6 cents in power. The previous two years his total was four cents per bushel, but the cost of doing business has increased. Overall, it requires one penny per bushel, per point of moisture in the drying process.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">In addition, Keller must also account for the carbon tax, which he says adds $1/acre onto his drying costs.</span></p>

<p class="p2"><span class="s2">His August 2018 gas bill was $4.537 per giga joule, of which gas was $1.10, transportation was $1.92 and $1.517 was the carbon tax. In September, his gas costs rose another 10 cents. While his sentiments towards the carbon tax are not as sharp as others, he does wish the province would recognize his own contribution to sequestering carbon.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“I’d be happy to pay carbon tax—no problem doing it—if zero-till farmers like myself actually got paid fair market value for the carbon we sequester in the ground,” he said. “That could turn into, by calculations I’ve done, a $30 to 50 per acre revenue stream for us. I can understand why the government wouldn’t jump at that.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Keller, like others, custom dries grain, charging $75 per hour plus gas, which fluctuates between $5 and $7, depending on outside temperature, crop type and its moisture content. He often sees grain that’s tougher than normal, too. “Some guys don’t have options when they’re taking off wheat over 20 per cent, canola over 15 per cent; elevators aren’t ones to deal with that,” he said. “There’s not a lot of wear and tear on our system and I know our costs. It’s worth my time to do it.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Despite knowing his business costs, Keller cannot get his head around three-phase setups operating off a generator set (gen-set). “[Some farmers] are probably spending four to five times more on power than what I am,” he said, adding that his fuel cost is $7.20 per hour while others hover around $30 per hour in diesel.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“From what I know about costs for fuel, you really better pencil that out better,” he said. “Guys say gen-sets on three-phase is better and all components are cheaper. You’re trying to save a few thousand now, but what are your costs long-term? I don’t think it’s always that well thought-out.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Keller recommends a thorough analysis of the farmyard to determine the best physical setup for the system. He kicks himself due to his tight laneway, which his dryer directly butts up against. “It’s handy for pulling in when you’re loading, but that’s about it,” he said.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">He also recommends looking for areas where you can eliminate manual labour. Keller said there are two types of farmers out there: ones who own a dryer, plan on using it and do use it annually and those who own a dryer and only use it if absolutely necessary. The latter simply befuddle him. “Those guys are typically on the low-tech side and they typically have to babysit it 24/7 and you can understand why,” he conceded. “You have to get some sleep sometime.”</span></p>

<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Further south, just off The Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway near Innisfail, Scott and Wade McAllister focus on malting barley at Antler Valley Farm. They manage 4,000 acres, including 1,450 of malt barley, their prize crop.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">They don’t wait for favourable skies to begin harvesting these days, either. They straight cut their barley in mid-to-late August and immediately begin drying. They recently upgraded their setup, too. In the past, the brothers were able to dry down 275 bushels per hour. However, that was when the farm was one-quarter the size it is today. They recently sold their old GSI dryer to a farmer near Kindersley, SK., purchasing a new setup from the same company. The big difference? The old system typically handled 275 bu/hr, while the new dryer is capable of handling anywhere from 1,000 to 1,300 bu/hr.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Their new stack dryer setup carried a cost in the mid-six figures, which includes the dryer itself, two legs, three bins, concrete pads for everything to rest on as well as electrical wiring and a diesel-power gen-set. They saved additional money by taking care of what manual labour they could ahead of time.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">They chose a stack dryer because it’s easier on malt barley as plenum temperatures don’t run as high, keeping the germination intact. Their old dryer was short and single-tier, which means it took longer to dry grain due to the dryer’s size, but did maintain a consistent temperature throughout. The new stack dryer setup is taller and longer, and since hot air rises, the grain can be dried using a lower temperature. The three-burner setup can handle any combination of hot and cold, depending on what crop they’re drying as well as what the outside temperature is and how many points of moisture they plan to remove from the grain.</span></p>
<p class="p2">“In August, when the outside temperature is warmer, we’ll have all three fans on heat and the grain will just cool in the bin,” said Wade, who is Alberta Barley’s region three director-at-large, he added it’s the most economic month during which to dry grain. “Later on, when we’re drying lots in October, we’ll do the first two burners heating and the bottom one cooling, so we’re not getting condensation when we’re dumping it hot.”</p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">The brothers’ dryer is top of the line, but they did pass on the fully-automated smartphone control add-on since their dryer is viewable from all points in the yard and someone is inevitably around moving grain.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">The dryer, a four-fold capacity upgrade, runs off a three-phase, 125 kVA diesel gen-set. McAllister looked into having three-phase brought into the farm yard and discovered it would have cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Beyond that, the monthly distribution charges would have been around $400. By using a gen-set, he’s not paying a distribution charge for the months he’s not using the dryer. In addition, the gen-set serves as a backup power supply for the farm itself, should there ever be a power outage.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">A three-phase gen-set does carry a cost, though. New units can retail for $50,000 while even second-hand machines can run as much as $30,000 depending on its hour count and condition.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">The gen-sets run on gas. Since marked fuel is exempt from both the provincial and federal carbon taxes, so farmers can utilize it for grain drying. “We feel that because you don’t have to pay carbon tax technically on farm fuel, we can use our farm diesel to burn in the generator,” he said, adding that for a 1,200- to 1,300-bushel load in the new dryer, it will take about four litres of diesel, the same amount their older, less efficient dryer needed to dry 250 to 300 bushels.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">However, they cannot escape the natural gas cost nor its attached<br />
carbon tax. His natural gas bill ended up being about $4,500 for six weeks of use this past fall to dry 70,000 bushels of grain. Of that total, the carbon tax and gas each accounted for $1,350 while the remaining fees went to distribution and administrative costs.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“For the last eight years we ran a dryer, we never had that massive tax on there. The gas price is almost the same as the carbon tax … it’s almost one-to-one,” he said. “We didn’t know how much we were going to dry … and that’s right off our bottom dollar. That’s right out of the profit that we’re making. Drying the grain is already costing so much cents a bushel, and then you add this carbon tax onto it, which means absolutely nothing. It’s frustrating. I’m not going to change it.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">The McAllisters spend anywhere from six to 10 cents per bushel to dry grains, plus man hours as well as general wear and tear, depending on the crop and its relative moisture content when they begin drying grain. “At the end of the day, it’s pretty cheap considering you may be gaining grades and up to $1 per bushel on malt quality,” he said.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">This past year all their barley made malt. It was combined Aug. 17 and was dried shortly thereafter from 16.5 per cent moisture down to the desired 13.5 per cent spec. “Even in a dry year, we’ll still fire it up and pull malt off at 16 to 18 per cent,” he said. “The cost of fuel is a fraction of the fuel you’ll use when it’s cold out. The sooner you can get harvest done, as long as the crop is naturally mature, the earlier you can get field work done and get fields prepared for next spring. Malt is such an unforgiving thing that you need to make sure you do everything you can to get it off.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">With the difficult year that it ended up being in central Alberta, McAllister confidently estimated he and brother Scott saved malt grade on every last kernel, all thanks to the grain dryer. “If I was thinking about a third combine, I’d buy a dryer instead,” he said. “If I was a banker, I’d give you money for a dryer way before I’d give you money for a combine.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">In addition to drying their own grain, they custom dry for anyone willing to haul to them. They charge $100 per hour plus fuel, just to keep the math simple. They even custom dried for two nearby elevators back in 2016. A third came knocking, too, but the brothers were booked up.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“Every year we do a little bit of custom drying, but with this new dryer, I think a lot more neighbours are going to be a lot more interested because they can pretty much haul a load in and by the time they get back with another load, it’ll probably be done and they can do round trips,” he said.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">He also recommends natural gas over propane because it’s often easy to access, costs less and burns more cleanly.</span></p>

<p class="p4"><span class="s2">RETAIL PERSPECTIVE<br />
</span><span class="s2">The trend that sees farmers setting up on-farm drying systems will not reverse itself anytime soon if you ask Dave Wall. The CEO of Wall Grain said Western Canada is in a great flux when it comes to post-harvest practices.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“They can combine earlier and go longer with harvest and go harder at the crop if the weather is looking bad,” said Wall of Prairie farmers. “Because of the crazy harvest, not just this year, but also 2016, we’re seeing more and more people want drying systems. They did before, but now it’s not just an emergency tool. It’s something that’s part of their long-term management plan.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Wall’s company gets all kinds of requests, but usually nothing below a 500-bushel capacity. If it’s less than that, farmers often search the used market first. Regardless, Wall labels the dryer as “the cheap part of the whole system.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Wet and dry bins, a blower system, bucket elevator, augers or legs, cement, electrical wiring and other components all carry a cost and $500,000-plus price tags are not hyperbole. Then there’s power. “Most producers are on single-phase [power], but most of the dryers and systems require three-phase, so most people will go and buy gen-sets,” he said.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">For farmers looking to set up a drying system, they better have done their homework because it could take months to have everything in place, depending on the dryer setup. Wall says that contingent on size, his company could only handle about 10 to 20 more installs in 2019.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“There’s just so many things that have to be done, including financing. Planning for a grain dryer system should be done one to two years in advance, not this year,” he said. “Many farmers bought dryers in a panic mode and still don’t have them set up.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Jayde Klassen is a GSI dryer technician at Wentworth AG and said the Alberta marketplace has really opened up in the last few years and people are opting for convenience over everything else. “A lot of the guys are getting rid of their old batch dryers and are moving into a more automated system where they can basically push start and walk away and let it run,” he said.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s3">Klassen believes it’s being done for ease of use, but also to save money and give farmers a chance to be at home more, or simply do other tasks that don’t involve sitting around staring at their dryer.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Alberta farmers may waffle between a dryer and a shiny new combine, but Klassen said if you have a dryer, there’s no need for the second combine since you can be in the field much earlier, just like the McAllister brothers.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">He also sees more interest in top-dry units as opposed to portable units, which are still seen in great number across the Prairies. “If you’re looking at buying a dryer, or bin, you might as well combine the two and do both there,” he said. “A lot of guys in the United States have been switching over to top drys and we’ve seen guys in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta start to explore their options with them as well and realize the cost savings with them.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">A top-dry dries the grain, dumps it, dries another load, dumps it onto the floor below and recycles the heat through the aeration fan. Then, when done, you use the bin as storage.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Above all, farmers must consider a large-sized setup right from the get-go. The cost is higher, but not too much higher, when initial prices are considered, according to Klassen. “The cost to go bigger isn’t significant compared to being held up at harvest when your dryer can’t keep up to the yields you’re doing or if you get another combine,” he said.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">Echoing Klassen’s sentiments is McAllister, who would take a dryer over a combine seven days a week, believing there’s no need for more combines when you have a dryer and greater control of your farm and, ultimately, harvest.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s2">“I think this new dryer is going to change the way we farm,” said McAllister. “We’re going to farm before Mother Nature says we’re ready. I think it will be a good thing. Talk to me this time next year and see.”</span></p>

<p>PROVINCIAL KICKBACK FOR DRYER IMPROVEMENTS</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Farmers who have so far held off upgrading or retrofitting their grain dryers may have the last laugh after the provincial government recently announced funds for farmers to bring their units up to 2019 standards.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">Under the Farm Energy and Agri-Processors (FEAP) program, farmers and the government will split costs on upgrading various components of their dryers to high-efficiency standards.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">The government’s overall goal is “to encourage energy management which will result in cost savings, energy conservation, and ultimately, reduced greenhouse gas emissions.” Within that, another aim is to reduce carbon emissions while keeping farmers profitable after many difficult harvests have cost them thousands of dollars in lost profit.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">“For many producers this year, grain had to be dried once it was in the bins,” said Oneil Carlier, the province’s agriculture minister. “Drying grain can be an unexpected expense and some producers were concerned about the cost of the carbon levy as it relates to natural gas and propane.”</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">Many brand-new components available to farmers at half price include heat exchangers, pre-heat systems utilizing exhaust air, variable-speed drives on electric motors and gravity-fill roofs instead of power-levelling augers.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">A number of retrofit parts will also be eligible for the government discount. These include hopper covers, automatic moisture controllers, PTO to electric motor conversions and new high-efficiency burners. Items such as conveyors, legs, aeration fans and bins are not eligible for the kickback.</span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">The maximum money an applicant can receive per year is $250,000. Other areas of the program are all designed to make farm operations more energy efficient, from wall insulation and new lighting to natural gas boilers and furnaces.</span></p>
